Why we do what we do.
Kids Club’s curriculum plan is based on the philosophy that children should explore their environment in ways that are meaningful to them. The environment is warm and loving, allowing for the exercise of creativity and imagination. It provides many opportunities for children to more fully develop their own interests and abilities.
Many of these opportunities are provided through child initiated, staff guided clubs. Some examples of clubs are community service, theatre, art, treasure hunt and reading clubs. Children also have the opportunity to sit on Kids Council, which is the advisory body of Kids Club. This group discusses and solves problems, helps plan and coordinate events and approves new clubs.
Staff strive to be sensitive to each child's developmental needs, while fostering a positive self-image. Clubs offer children the opportunity to learn important skills and are a great way for them to learn about their roles in groups, achieve success outside of academics, and gain personal responsibility and accountability. Kids Club provides a fun and exciting structure for children and gives them many opportunities to develop social and emotional competence.
How it all started.
In 1984, Community Day Care piloted a before-school program at Burns Park Elementary for the Ann Arbor Public Schools. In the spring of 1985, the Ann Arbor Board of Education approved the operation of before- and after-school care programs in all public schools based on the experience of this pilot study. In winter 2008 we began discussion with Ann Arbor Learning Community and started a new program there in the fall of 2009. We currently run programs at Ann Arbor Learning Community, Lawton and Burns Park Elementary Schools.
