Why we do what we do.
The K-Care program's curriculum plan is based on the philosophy that children should explore their environment in ways that are meaningful to them. The environment is warm and loving, allowing for the exercise of creativity and imagination. Our curriculum balances teacher-directed with child-initiated experiences. Staff strive to be sensitive to each child's developmental needs, while fostering a positive self-image. We use focal points as an organizational tool in our planning: these focal points, such as "friendship," "dinosaurs," or "winter," change each week. The teacher-initiated activities correspond to the focal point for the week.
How it all started.
Community Day Care has had a Kindergarten program at the Preschool since 1972. In the spring of 2001, Mrs. Morhous, the Principal of Burns Park Elementary, approached us and asked if we would extend our Kindergarten program and offer care on-site at Burns Park. We began running the K-Care program in the fall of that year, offering afternoon care to children in the morning kindergarten classes. After two years of a successful program, we were approached again and asked to open a second section of K-Care. In the fall of 2003, we expanded to offer both morning and afternoon sessions of K-Care. Availability of morning sessions depends in part on the schedule of kindergarten classes in the current year.
