Why we do what we do.
Community Day Care's curriculum plan is based on our philosophy that children learn best through active play and exploration in a stimulating environment. Our curriculum is child centered and play-based; that is, children are given many opportunities to engage in free-choice activities that encourage developmental growth in the following areas: affective/social skills, cognitive development, language and dramatic play, gross and fine motor skills, creative art and music.

The activities we offer to the children, and the projects our teachers organize for their groups, are designed to be both fun and engaging while at the same time stimulating growth in one or more targeted development areas. We dedicate a substantial portion of the day to "choice time," in which children may choose freely among several different activities structured with developmental goals in mind. By presenting them with choices, our curriculum eases them along the critical process of learning to make choices and developing a well-grounded sense of independence.

We use focal points as an organizational tool in our curriculum planning. Focal points, such as "winter," "science," or "family," change every two weeks. Teachers plan focal point activities together to provide continuity throughout the center.

Even more important than our curriculum is our staff. Not only are they innovative and credentialed professionals, but they love working with children and bring great energy to our program. Our teachers develop personal relationships with the children, model appropriate behavior to them, and treat them with respect as individuals. We work to build on that foundation of love and respect to help children learn to treat each other in the same way.
